Doing our bit

Water has so many uses for so many people. It's not just a necessity for us, it's also a home and haven for our wildlife. That's why it is important that we all give a second thought to water and do what we can to protect it.

In the future we need to become more efficient in the way that we use water in our homes and gardens. If we all do our part to make small changes where we can, we will help ensure that the way we use water is more sustainable for the future. Some of the measures we are taking are below:

Fixing leaks
Leakage of water from the ageing mains network is a major issue for every water company in the UK. We are working hard to reduce leakage losses from the network and we expect to continue to meet the targets agreed with our regulator, Ofwat, for reduced water loss.

Significant investment is in progress to upgrade the ageing network of pipes, which is vulnerable to bursts and leaks. We are speeding up the rate

at which we replace old pipes with those made from modern materials and are specifically targeting those areas where customers suffer from most bursts.

Installing meters
Statistics (taken from the Three Valleys Water "water efficiency leaflet") With the full support of Ofwat, we have decided to meter all properties when they are sold, when they are newly tenanted and when they are newly built. As well as being a fairer way to charge for water use, metering is proven to reduce demand, particularly at peak times during the summer months. This will continue to form a key part of our strategy in the long term. We aim for 43% of our domestic customers to have a water meter by the year 2010 and 82% by 2030.

Community awareness
Our award-winning Environment & Education Centre , carries out research into water efficient gardening methods, as well as educating local school children about the importance of saving water and the environment. With 6,000 visitors a year, the centre is kept busy promoting the importance of caring for the environment, and in particular the vital role of water.

We are monitoring the impact of water use through activities such as water audits and water butt campaigns, and will continue the award winning School Water Audit Project, where we work with pupils to identify potential water savings in their school.
