What we are doing about leaks
We are committed to reducing leakage to avoid
wasting water. We are investing £15 million
each year in fixing leaks, and last year we found and repaired
27,000 leaks.
| Every year, by finding and fixing leaks, we save the equivalent
of 85 million litres of water per day - enough to fill 34
Olympic-sized swimming pools every day. We are also
investing £140 million over the next 5 years in renewing
640 kms of water pipes in areas most affected by bursts and
leaks.

| Pipes are watertight when they are laid in the ground. However, although we may not notice it, the ground often moves when there is a very
hard frost, an excess of water or when it dries
out in the summer months
This movement can cause pipes to pull apart at the joints or crack and consequently leak valuable water. In addition, the physio-chemical properties of some soils will sometimes speed corrosion, especially on iron pipes, to cause leaks. |
It is vital that we all work together to keep leakage under control. You can help by keeping a lookout for possible leaks and reporting them via our Leakspotters hotline. Telephone us on 0800 376 5325, or
