'Tree'mendous job

Three Valleys Water joined the London Borough of Barnet’s Arboricultural team to plant four new trees along Avion Cresent, Mill Hill to green-up the traffic island following a burst water main.

While most of us were enjoying the taste of turkey on Christmas Day, a team from Three Valleys Water were out dealing with a burst 16 inch water main in Avion Crescent, Mill Hill. The escaping water was turned off and preparations started for the repair. Unfortunately the old water pipe ran straight underneath and through the roots of a 30 year old London plane tree.

Eddie Owen, Three Valleys Water Network Technical Manager said: “When carrying out our works we aim to minimise disruption and take into account environmental concerns; often this can mean employing an environmental specialist to ensure that we avoid laying our water mains near large trees or even hand-digging to avoid roots. In this instance the water main had been laid well before the tree was planted and unfortunately we had to work with the London Borough of Barnet’s Arboricultural team to remove the tree so that we could carry out the repair.”

“We’re pleased that we could donate four new trees and hope that the local community and passers by will benefit.”
