An afternoon out for the elderly of Northwood
Mayor of Hillingdon, Councillor Catherine Dann received a donation of £500 from local water company Three Valleys Water last week when she spent an afternoon with members of Northwood Live at Home group.
Northwood Live at Home is one of the charities that the Mayor is supporting during her term of office. The scheme supports elderly members of the community and helps to enable them to lead more rewarding lives.
Councillor Dann said; “This organisation, with the help of volunteers, at present supports 100 elderly people who are isolated and unable to get out and about as they used to. It also helps with befriending, regular visiting, information service, supported shopping, regular trips and outings. They meet once a month for tea and a get together at the Methodist Church and I am hoping to raise sufficient funding during my term of office to enable a twice monthly session. This donation from Three Valleys Water will help me achieve that.”
Angela O’Malley, Live at Home Manager added;”The Northwood Live at Home Scheme has been supporting elderly members of our community since 1997. The aim of the scheme is to recruit volunteers to enable us to offer services such as an information service and Volunteer befrienders, who visit regularly, offering friendly company. We organise a tea and chat once a month, often with entertainment or the opportunity to learn more about healthy lifestyles from a guest speaker. We also arrange outings and trips further afield with one-to-one assistance and door-to-door transport to garden centres, restaurants and places of interest. One request that we hear more and more is for assistance to our members to go shopping. Many of our members feel unable to get to medical appointments or go to the shops by themselves. Choosing your own groceries is a real treat for someone living at home alone.”
