| Batchworth Lock Canal Centre | |
| Batchworth Lock was an important stopping point on the Grand Union Canal, the main artery of trade between London and the Industrial Midlands. Nearly 100 miles long, the canal was an amazing feat of engineering. It took a gang of 100 men three weeks to dig out a mile stretch with pickaxe, shovel and wheelbarrow. | |
| The canal shop and information centre is housed in former stables where horses rested overnight, whilst boatmen refreshed themselves in the nearby Boat Inn. The centre is open on Saturday and Sunday and visitors are welcome to browse and gain more detailed information on the Lock from one of the many volunteers. | |
| Batchworth Lock is owned by British Waterways, who manage 2000 miles of canals and rivers in Britain. | |
| The Canal Centre is ten minutes walk from Rickmansworth Station (Metropolitan and mainline) and close to the town where the main Rickmansworth to London road crosses the Grand Union Canal. | |
