Sustainability

In an age of consumerism and search for material wealth, sustainability as a concept can be difficult for primary children to understand and for teachers to introduce. Our Education Section (either at the Environment and Education Centre, Bushey or on a visit to your school) can draw together various areas of citizenship to show children how decisions they, their family and friends make can have a dramatic affect on the future of their world.
In the main we still have the luxury of choice whereas future generations will not if we do not make our choices carefully. With the children, we can look at examples where decisions in the past have led to the depletion of resources and species. Now that we are aware of the problem it is important for children to understand that it is inexcusable to allow the depletion to go on. The positive, optimistic approach that we give to issues of sustainability will encourage children to use their power of choice carefully.
