Environmental Issues/Citizenship/Sustainability

The study of environmental issues gives excellent opportunities for teachers to bring alive concepts of sustainability and citizenship. Children can gain an understanding about their role as citizens by taking an active part in decision making, and by getting involved in practical projects within their schools and the wider community.
For both school visits and INSET training sessions we use everyday issues to encourage active citizenship and an understanding of the concept of sustainability.
Issues such as:
The reuse and recycling of materials
Cutting down on our production of waste and rubbish
Debating topics such as the environmental impact of bottled water compared with tap water
Exploring the true cost to the environment of the food on our plate
These activities are designed to be fun and to give the children or adults the opportunity to make choices. Debates and discussions are encouraged because there is always more than one side to the story. The activities do not require any expensive or special resources, just a little pre-planning and the collection of everyday items.
